Common Foot and Ankle Sports Injuries
Sports-related foot and ankle injuries can occur due to a sudden injury or they can develop slowly over time due to repetitive pounding and stress on the feet. Some of the most common sports-related foot and ankle injuries include ankle sprains, Achilles tendonitis, and plantar fasciitis.
- Ankle sprains can affect athletes participating in either recreational or competitive sports. They occur when the ankle gets twisted in a different direction than the foot, causing ligaments in the ankle to become torn.
- Achilles tendonitis affects the back of the heel. This condition is associated with an inflamed achilles tendon, which can cause pain and discomfort at the back of the heel.
- Plantar fasciitis is associated with pain and discomfort along the bottom of the heel, as well as along the arch of the foot. It occurs when the plantar fascia tissues running along the bottom of the feet become inflamed.
- Heel spurs can also develop in conjunction with plantar fasciitis and can result in additional heel pain.
